'Hawkins Gym is located in Downtown Hattiesburg and is an Art Deco style gymnasium. It was a WPA project. Before Hawkins was built, Hattiesburg High School rented the YMCA gym for it’s basketball games. In the 1930’s numerous articles began to appear in the Hattiesburg American calling for HHS to get a gym of their own. It was eventually approved and construction began in May of 1936 and completed in February of 1937. The first games played in the gym were Hattiesburg High vs. Purvis High, both boys and girls basketball, on February 16, 1937. The gym was also used by nearby Hawkins Jr. High School. Over the years the gym was used for numerous things such as graduations, dances, Physical Education, concerts, gymnastics & wrestling events. The gymnasium closed sometime in the late 2000’s. Sadly Hawkins Gym was burned to the ground on February 7, 2021.
