They can be developed, enabling a performer to increase their optimal level of performance. MM FABS (named after the remarkably tasty Fab ice lolly!) Muscular Strength Is the maximum amount of force a muscle can generate in one contraction. For example a weightlifter. Muscular Endurance The muscle’s ability to contract repeatedly against a low resistance for a long time without fatigue. For example a Marathon runner. Flexibility The Range Of Movement (ROM) Available at a joint. It relies on the pliability and elasticity of muscles surrounding a joint. For example a gymnast achieving aesthetically pleasing positions. Aerobic Endurance The ability to take oxygen in, transport it around the body, utilise it in the muscles and sustain exercise without fatigue. For example a games player throughout their match. Body Composition The ratio of fat, to muscle, to fat-free mass in a persons body. A marathon runner would want low quantities of fat and muscle so they are lighter and can run with more efficiency, whereas a rugby forward will want high amounts of muscle and some fat to generate more force in tackles. Speed The time taken to cover a distance. Speed = Distance / Time. An example of a speed calculation would be a 100m runner, completing it in 10s gives at a speed of 10m/s. The speed of a joint can also be measured, by calculating how quickly the limb moves around a joint, for example a tennis players shoulder during their serve. SKILL RELATED COMPONENTS OF FITNESS These components are products of the application of health related COFs in sporting contexts. Agility This is the ability to move and change direction without the loss of speed or balance. For example when a rugby winger is attempting to evade a defender. Balance This is the ability to maintain Centre Of Mass (COM) over a Base Of Support (BOS). The COM is the central balancing point in a body, where if a force was applied through it, no rotation would occur. For example, when standing the belly button region is the COM and feet are the BOS. If the belly button stays aligned between them a person will remain balanced. On one leg however, the size of the BOS is reduced, and it is more likely that the COM will tilt out of alignment with the BOS, causing the person to lose balance and fall. Static Balance = COM over BOS when stationary. Dynamic Balance = COM over BOS while moving. Coordination This is the ability to use two or more parts of the body with accuracy and control. For example when a baseball player uses hand and eye coordination to swing their arm and bat with appropriate direction and force according to the flightpath of a ball they are watching. Power This is the combination of speed and strength, the rate a muscle can apply its maximum force. Power = Speed x strength. A boxer will want to exert force as quickly as possible into their opponent through punches, in an attempt to win. Reaction time This is the time between the onset of a stimulus and the initiation of a response to it, or, the delay between something happening and the performer responding to what just happened. For example a 100m runner driving out of the blocks when they hear the starting gun.'
