Find out more here: http://tinatak.com/ Judo Judo has the reputation of being a well-rounded martial art. Training can be applied to self-defense, competitive sport, fitness, recreation and fun. Judo became an Olympic sport in 1964 with a strict set of rules to ensure safety. Participants can apply throwing techniques and grappling techniques on the ground utilizing hold downs/pins and for the older teenagers, arm locks and chokes. It is practiced by millions world-wide by girls and boys, men and women, young and old. Presently, the school offers classes to age 5 and up. As an excellent way to stay or get in physical shape Judo utilizes all the muscles in the body and all the energy systems. Practitioners/judoka develop strength, coordination, flexibility, speed, power and aerobic and anaerobic cardiovascular fitness. It also instills discipline, concentration and self-confidence. Judo is a full contact martial art and one learns that co-operation and helping each other achieves goals more quickly. Respect for others as well as proper etiquette is emphasized in the classes. For all these reasons, judo is fundamentally, the best martial art for children. Tina Takahshi Martial Arts & Fitness offers classes to age 5 and up. Pee Wee classes are designed for the younger age group of 5 to 7 years old and can practice once or twice a week. The older children can opt to practice one, two or three times or more per week. The program starts with learning to fall properly without getting hurt. Various “breakfalls” are taught and constantly reinforced for safety. This is a practical life skill that everyone should learn. Typical classes are composed of warm-ups with a variety of exercises, drills to reinforce skills, standing and ground technique practice, sparring and games. “Practice” competition matches, refereeing and kata (pre-arranged forms of exercises) are also included when the judoka is ready. Our school focuses not only on the competitive sport aspect of judo, but also on self-defence. In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano started Kodokan Judo by refining the ancient martial art of ju jutsu, keeping the best techniques and taking out the dangerous ones, so that one could practice full on without getting hurt. Tina’s background also includes Shotokan Karate which is included in the training. Students learn the correct way to punch, kick and block to supplement their self-defense training. In this way, students will become exceptionally, well rounded martial arts practitioners. One main principle of judo is “best use of energy”. The judoka learns to be adaptable or flexible, using movement to unbalance and leverage for the efficient application of his or her skills. The other main principle of judo is “mutual welfare and benefit”. Develop oneself to the best of his/her ability, help others do the same and together the development will be stronger and this contributes value to society. Video by Garmamie Ottawa, Ontario'
